I quilt at the kitchen table. My family has slowly migrated all around me. To my right is my husband who works from home on his laptop, to my left is my son, working on an art project, and across from me, is my daughter coloring. Our table measures 45" around. Yup, I measured and it's cozy! : )
I'm dreaming of adding a cutting table where I can work. Alone, but with good company near by.
WISHLIST:
- Counter Height
- Storage
- Wheels to move if necessary
- Big enough to hold my 24"x36" cutting mat
- Under $200
I pinned all kind of possibilities to Pinterest tonight in the name of research. Not surprising lots of Ikea options popped up. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear. What do you love about your cutting table? Is there anything you wish were different? Are you like me and dreaming of cutting tables??

All the pictures are so pretty, it's hard to pick a favorite! I have a sewing table, but not a cutting table. I still do my cutting on the floor.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your "pins." So beautiful. But, my reality is that my sewing room has to double as the guest room, so my cutting table is just a cheap, double gate-fold table on rolling casters from JoAnns. It's a bit wobbly, but is the perfect height and can get huge or tiny, depending on what I'm working on.
ReplyDeleteI cut on the floor. This room isn't big enough to have a cutting table - two desks and an Ikea shelf thingy and some built-in wardrobes and it's pretty much full!
ReplyDeleteI see you have a pic of my cutting table in your pinterest collection. I love that ikea table and it was the best money I've spent in my sewing room. What I love the most is the adjustable height - so important for the back if you're spending a few hours there. I've seen it used at desk height in kid's rooms too.
ReplyDeleteI, like you, sew on my Kitchen Table. Ours is rectangular, so I cut on one end, and sew on the other.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in the market for a "cutting table", I would probably go the route of a few dressers back to back with a cutting mat on top. That way I'd have storage space as well as cutting space. Personally, I'd start looking at used furniture stores where a waist high dresser can be picked up for less than $20.
Good Luck!

I amwith you dreaming of a cutting table. I am hoping to have my father-in-law build me one once me move. I also want it to have a spot beveled out for my mat so that it lays flat with the rest of the table. Now that would be heaven :)
ReplyDeleteWow, all those pictures...if I could ever have a space half as beautiful as those! I'm using a desk right now, I don't have much of a storage area so all my fabrics are on top of or under the desk....very disorganized (even when I have just tidied up).
ReplyDeletei must say that i would love to have alicia paulsons sewing area. it is just so beautiful!
ReplyDeletemy cutting table is kitchen counter height and i love it! when i was cutting on a lower table my back always hurt.
I sure would love a sewing room like the ones you found for show and tell! Like you, I work in regular home space. Actually spaces. We don't have a large house, so I can't have a room all to myself. My cheap machine works on the kitchen table, where I do my piecing. My better machine lives at a new sewing desk in what is supposed to be a dining room area, but is more like an office area. This is where I do fancy stitching and my newly acquired freemotion quilting. My cutting mat actually lives on the table in the great room where I can put a show on the TV while I'm working. Since it is in front of the sofa, this is also where I do my hand stitching (bindings, labels, etc.). The ironing board lives in a corner of the great room, tucked by the piano.
ReplyDeleteBeing spaced out around the house is actually very good for me, because I have circulatory issues. So getting up to take the steps from whatever station I'm working at to the iron or wherever else is beneficial.
I never understood the hype over these cutting tables... until I read your post! These examples are so beautiful and functional and inviting! I love the tables with open shelves, but I do love Alicia's room the most because of those fabulous windows open to the natural world. I wish my sewing room had space for something like this! Hope you can get one for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI cut on the floor and sew on the kitchen table. But I'm filing away Paul's back-to-back dresser idea for when I have room.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Off to explore.
ReplyDeleteWOW- what gorgeous craft rooms!! Stunning! Mine is a disaster area, but I do have a specific room, so all I do it shut the door! :o)
ReplyDeleteHappy Dreaming!
I think you should open your search to include tables without wheels, because it would be TOTALLY easy to add them. All you have to do is drill a hole in the bottom of each leg and drill in a wheel from the hardware store. Oh man, now I want to make one of the fancy dresser types...
ReplyDeleteI ended up combining the kitchen/cutting table idea. When I renovated the kitchen, I had a 2 metre x 1 metre island bench installed. That way I get the lovely cutting table without taking up precious space in my small sewing room. I love looking at others' wonderful spaces though and you have got some beauties there.
ReplyDeleteIn my studio I have a huge cutting table, which is actually three tables (3 ft X 5 ft) that my husband put together. He removed the legs and built a shelved base then attached the tables sides touching to make one table that is 5 ft X 9 ft. This won't work for your space, but the point is that if you keep your options open, you may have an idea that works even better than the photos you've found. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI have commandeered a room, but it has to double as a guest room as well. I would really like to work with someone to get the most out of this room: great storage, wonderful, fun look, comfy bed for those pesky ;-) guests and good workspace. I know I want to get a wallbed (something like: http://wallbedsnmore.com/wallbeds/lexington-wallbed.html) so that I don't have to devote permanent space to a bed. Someday. I am trying to find little steps to take to achieve my goal.
ReplyDeleteYou may want to check out an internet site of a local store. I live in Utah where RC Willey occasionally has a Wild and Wacky Wednesday on their internet site. I picked up my cutting table from them on it and it's perfect and oh so sturdy! I got it for about $150.00, maybe it was $100.00 but I don't remember bz it's been awhile. Your local stores may have some deals like this. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteP.S. If you have a handy husband Ana White has many options on her website and some even are like the Pottery Barn craft tables. She has incredible patterns that are free for making these tables. I wish I'd have known about her before I ran all over looking for things for my sewing room! Would have saved me much time and $$.
ReplyDeleteYou can make your own cutting table using stock upper kitchen cabinets, heavy duty casters, and an unfinished door, all from Home Depot or Lowes, for about $200 or less. I've priced them out in the process of designing a sewing studio for our quilt ministry. The cabinets have storage and can be placed either back to back or on the ends of the table. I use something similar to this in my own sewing studio, and it works great. The door is plenty large enough for me to put my 24 x 36 mat on, plus my sewing machine! And it's about 36" tall, the perfect height to cut at. I use a stool for sewing and a box underneath to put my presser foot on to make it reachable.
ReplyDeletejealous of all of them! so much light and so much space!
