Books, Sewing and Palm Springs!!

This is what my nightstand looks like right now.  I've got three books and two ponies.  The littles decided to decorate.  Haha!  The books are: Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross, Lotta Prints and Simple Sewing for Baby both by Lotta Jansdotter.  Heather is hosting a sewing workshop in Palm Springs this weekend and I get to go!!  Sunshine and sewing?  Sounds good to me!  DH planned all of it when he read how excited I was on the forum.  (ETA: Hmmm I only see a post with the dates listed.  I guess I must have been going on and on about it at home.  Heather Ross!  Sewing!  Palm Springs!!)

This trip is giving me a chance to step outside by comfort zone.  I can strip piece and I sew a 1/4" seam, but I have very little experience garment sewing.  I'm hoping to tackle zippers, buttons and patterns under Heather's watchful eye.  Lotta will be teaching us a printing technique.  My mind is full of thread, elastic, buttons, and pins.  I'm making a supply list and checking it twice.

Please share if you have any advice regarding packing for a sewing class.  What is in your basic sewing kit?  Thread, scissors, snippers, seam ripper, etc...  How to you stow it all?  Tupperware?  Bag?  I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and would love to hear what you do.

You can read more about the books here:

  1. Wow! How exciting! Garment sewing scares me too. I think a couple of years of sewing classes at school was enough to turn me off it for life! I do need to learn how to sew zippers though because our lounges are still without cushions and we really, really need some!

  2. Oh! And a tupperware type thing sounds good for storing your sewing bits and bobs. :-)

  5. I use a two-sided plastic pencil box for my travel sewing kit - it holds a pair of small, very sharp scissors; a couple of bobbins of thread (usually one black, one white); some pins; some needles; a seam ripper; one of those small measuring guides with a slider in the center; and then there's room left for anything specific I might need, like buttons, snaps, etc. Have fun - sewing in the sunshine sounds awesome!!

  6. I went to the HR weekend this past weekend and it was great. I packed WAY too much. I'd bring two or three things you might want to work on along with coordinating thread, pins, scissors, etc. You'll have a blast.

  7. Don't forget the zipper foot fr your sewing machine. It seems basic, but that's the kind of thing I'd forget! I can't wait to see the cuteness you come up with!

  10. It sounds indulgent, but I have a separate kit for when I travel, which includes going to classes, or a sew day or a trip like you took with Heather Ross. I like knowing that I don't have to worry about forgetting to pack something. I have a Tupperware box with my scissors, pins, rotary cutter, etc in it.
