Happy Bird

I cut into my Red Rose Farm fabrics last night.  These fabrics are so cheerful.  With the shipping deadline approaching for the Scrappy Mug Rug swap I decided to squeeze one more in.  A happy little bird for my partner.  I think I'm going to send her my recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies too.  It's a keeper!

Smocked Sundress Success

As soon as I saw this daisy print from Sandi Henderson's Meadowsweet I wanted to make a sundress for my daughter.  I have never sewn clothes before, but I saw Heather Ross do it on the Martha show and I wanted to try.  So many firsts occured while making this dress...

* first time using elastic thread
* first time using a hem tool
* first time attempting (and conquring) a blind hemstitch
* first time poking daughter with a pin (ouch!  Sorry!!)

I read through this tutorial from House on Hill Road and this one from Heather Ross's blog as my starting point.  I started it in June and I finished it today!  I kept putting it off because I made it a little too big and it needed to be rehemmed.  Lame.  Mother Nature extended summer with a crazy hot week.  A perfect excuse to finish if you ask me.  Now excuse me while I put my iron away.  : )

Quilt along, coming along

Progressimo!  I got the last of my fabric from fabricworm and I was off to the races.  Piecing and trimming and humming along to Nickelback... my son is obsessed with "photograph".  He plays it over and over again... LOUD!  Yeah, I keep reminding myself that he's four.  : )

I got this lovely pile after a late night trimming session.  I changed out my rotary blade after going over the same spot over and over.  Note to self... change that blade more often! The new one is like buttah.

And here are all the blocks marinating on my design wall.  I leave them up there for a day or two.  I like to walk into the room and ponder and rearrange.  It helps me to take a picture and look at it on my computer.  It always looks so different.  Gonna get these guys sewn together tonight.

Progress, Circa 50 Blocks

Progress!  I've got a good start on my Circa 50 quilt for the Fat Quarterly Quilt Along.

I'm having playing with the blocks I've made up so far.

My Kona solids came today from Pink Chalk Fabrics.

Wow.  Fast!  This is an entirely new palette for me.  I love all of them but I wouldn't have put them together on my own.  From top to bottom: Rich Red, Red, Lagoon, Cactus, Olive, Ash and Medium gray.  When I opened up the mail, my heart started beating faster.  It really did.  I wasn't expecting that!  I've already got plans for the extras and I'm kind of excited.

Week Two of GIVEAWAYS over on the forum, Talk About Fabric.  This week we're giving away 2 charm packs of City Weekend by Liesl Gibson for Oliver & S for Moda.  Check it out!  Talk About Fabric

Aren't the edges of charm packs cool?

Mug Ruggin'

Bigger than a coaster, smaller than a placemat may I introduce you to the Mug Rug.

So fun to make!  The whole thing measures about 4"x8".  Perfect for a cup of coffee and a cookie.  This one is going to my secret partner as part of the Scrappy Mug Rug Swap.  I did a patchwork of 1.5" squares using Heather Bailey's Freshcut, some pink Kei Dots and a little Michael Miller Pindot in apple.

Here are some pictures I found inspiring. But that was weeks ago. You've got to see what this creative flickr group is up to now!

Favorites for the Mug Rug Swap
1. a scrappy mug rug, 2. DQS9 & Goodies - I hope she likes them!, 3. Mendocino coasters, 4. don't play like you gnome me, 5. Lovely Package from AmandaJean!, 6. Coasters

Homework, Circa 50

I had some self assigned homework this weekend.  I needed to do a little fabric shopping for the Fat Quarterly Quilt Along.  I knew I wanted to use this bundle of Circa 50 by Birch Fabrics and I wanted some solids to go with it.  Out came my Kona color card.

I ordered olive, lagoon, rich red, medium gray and ash from Pink Chalk Fabrics.  They had ALL the colors I needed and Kathy Mack is awesome!  One stop shopping.  I love it!  : )

My husband bought this Fat Quarter pack for me last year from Birch Fabrics in Paso Robles, Ca.

If you're interested in joining the quilt along there is still plenty of time.  Pick a great jelly roll and you are ahead of the game!  The first set of directions are here and the flickr group is here.  I hope to see you there.

It's Not You, It's Me

Dear Putty Essex,

We need to talk.  This isn't working for me anymore.  You are a beautiful fabric.  We have made some good memories and I have really loved our time together.  It's time for me to move on now.  It's not you, it's me.  Maybe we can still be friends?

Undoing and redoing my bento blocks and changing out the Essex putty for white.  A tedious process to be sure!  I figured if I was going to spend all that time making a quilt, it should be something that felt right... to me.  This feels much better.  ; )

ps, I will be hosting a giveaway on Talk About Fabric tomorrow.  Don't miss it!  : )

Some Assembly Required

Ta Da....

It's my kaleidoscope quilt!  I'm cheating a little.  It's not a completed top... yet.  These are just blocks propped up on my "design wall".  You know, a flannel sheet tacked to the wall?  ; )

I was too excited about how it was coming together, I had to show you.  The kids love seeing me stick things to the magic wall and they helped too.  My two year old did a great job of sticking up blocks backwards (seams up) as far as she could reach.  She was also very generous, "One for me and one for you Mommy!"  Then I told my four year old about the game I was playing called,  "Squares of the same color, can't touch each other.  Find any that are touching."  And he did!  And I gave him a big kiss.  And then I fixed it.  I can't wait to quilt it.

I have some more exciting news to share soon.  Stay tuned.
