I'm working on finishing up the whirligig quilt for my son. He's had a lot of input so far especially on the colors and it's fun getting that feedback from him. He's 4. I had a bunch of white cut out for the back of his quilt. My plan was use white and add a strip of whirligigs on the back, or maybe just one for the label. Simple. My son sees all the white and says, "Mama, you should add colors all over this white!"
I came up with this using all the scraps I had leftover from the front. They were already 5" tall so I cut them all different widths and strung them together. I needed a little white on the top and bottom because the rest of the back is going to be a print. Yes, not white. Who does this kid think he is anyways?!
I really like it. These colors are so cheerful and so him. It was really fun putting it together the strip spontaneously. I will be doing this again. Maybe even on a whole quilt. So I have the back mostly done, the top done, almost time to quilt and bind.

Buy the Bolt
When I was about to start my log cabin quilt, I emailed Camille for a solid fabric recommendation to compliment her "Simple Abundance" line. I do a lot of my fabric shopping online and I wasn't sure about buying, white, cream, ivory type colors without seeing it in person. She recommended Moda Bella solids in Snow. I bought two yards and loved it. It has a softer, silkier feel compared to Kona.
I ran out before I could finish my blocks... and bought some more. I ran out again... and bought an entire bolt! You see, I've got a lot of quilts to make. Three yards here, two there. Fifteen yards goes faster than you think. I can't spend all my time stalking the UPS man. I thought I was all set. I told my husband I was all set. And I was, until I started working on my whirlygig quilt. I used white this time and ran out... so what did I do? I bought a bolt!

Birch Fabrics
I'm starting to love it when my husband goes out of town for business. On his drive home, he stops by Birch Fabrics and buys fabric... for me! I'm a very lucky lady. :) Have you seen Cynthia's new store? Gorgeous! We're planning our next family vacation so I can see Birch in person. In the meantime... I will keep shopping at their online store, fabricworm.
He picked out a bundles of Cynthia's new line Circa 50s',
Robert Kaufman's Groove
and Nicey Jane.
Well, technically the Nicey Jane is for our pink obsessed two year old. He asked Cynthia for "something pink." Our daughter approved. She carried the bundle all around the house telling us, "for me! pink! i love it!" She can't sew yet so I get to play too.
