Hey Prewashers...

I prewash my fabrics but I want to know if I have to iron them too.  Other than aesthetics, is there a reason to have your fabric ironed in the cupboard?  This stack is washed and folded, but not ironed.

I was ironing new fabrics, putting them away, and ironing them again before cutting them.  Why?  I'll fold it, I'll make pretty stacks, but do I have to iron it?  Can't I just iron once, right before I need it?

I read recently that the chemicals that are on new fabric can discolor and damage it over time.  They also contain pesticides to repel bugs.  It made me want to wash everything in my cupboard... now.  Hence the ironing!

What do you do?

  1. Well, I don't know about you, but when I pull them out of the dryer, they tend to be all twisted and wrinkly. And I think the longer you let them sit all twisted and wrinkly, the harder it'll take to iron the wrinkles out.

So, yeah I take them out, iron them and then fold them up and put them away. Besides, it'll lay flatter if they are ironed and folded as opposed to just folded, so you can fit more fabric where ever you put them away to :P

  2. I take them out before they're fully dry so that my dry iron will "steam" out any wrinkles. The catch here is you have to iron right away!

  3. i don't prewash! i know that is bad in some circles but i just never have done it. too lazy. the fabrics in your pile already look ironed...that is amazing...i don't see why you would need to iron two times.

  4. I do prewash because they are treated with chemicals. But I do not iron until I am ready to use them. I love your beautiful stack of 30s!!

  5. I have to admit that I wonder about the ironing twice. If I'm pressed (whoops, pardon the pun!) for time I part fold loosely and iron later before putting away. But usually I damp dry and then 'steam' out the wrinkles. Nice stash!

  6. I prewash sometimes and agree -it's probably best to take them out of the dryer before they've fully dried..it's easier to iron them that way. I don't always iron them straight after, but think it's best, as the wrinkles seem harder to get out if I don't...

  7. When I prewash I iron before putting away. Why? Well for the simple reason, it looks better and makes me want to use it. Usually when washed fabric isn't ironed it looks a little ratty and I won't want to use it.

  8. iron schmiron!! nope, don't iron until i absolutely positutely have to! some materials don't come out as well from the dryer, but i love almost all materials--they all look great to me!! maybe i'm just not as discerning as all the rest of you, but i'm happy with how my quilts turn out and they get ironed mostly as they're being made

  9. I don't wash them until I'm ready to use them, but after reading that about the chemicals and pesticides maybe I should change my ways!

  10. I don't prewash, and I know I'm "throwing the dice" with that practice. I really need to consider prewashing again, which I used to do in the very beginning.
