Quilting For Fun

Some of you have noticed a shift in my sewing lately. There has been a lot more of it! I've made some big changes in my quilting life. The biggest change is after two years, I am no longer the president of the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild. It was someone else's turn to steer the ship for awhile and so far I'm having fun being *just* a participant. : )

Color is really rocking my world lately. I can't get enough playing with color! This combination reminds me of the moody Santa Cruz coastline in winter. I bought the fabric back in July, after putting together this mood board. It's finally time to cut into that fabric!!

My local fabric shop has free sew nights and I brought my fabric with me on Friday.  I spent most of the time cutting 2.5" strips. It was a lot of cutting. A lot. Thank goodness for Dr. Pepper and drive throughs, right guys? ; )

Now I've been working on putting strips sets together and playing with the layout.

The plan is to make a Scrap Vomit Quilt, but with a limited color palette. The name might surprise you if you haven't already seen Katy's quilts. The blocks don't look like much on their own, but I'm excited to watch it come together. So far I really love the scrappy look of it. The hit of tomato red gives it a little zing. The fabrics are a mix of Cameo by Amy Butler, Birds and Bees by Tula Pink and a little Art Gallery too.

Spring House by Stephanie Ryan

Cute selvage!

Help! I haven't sewn anything in days!! The "ick" (a.k.a. the Flu) came to California and settled in to stay at our house for a few days. We were warned it was coming. I remember looking at a US map on the news a couple of weeks ago and every state was colored in except California. Eesh. It was only a matter of time. It hit right when Heather Ross came to townhad lunch with my friends, and signed books and sewing machines(!) at a local fabric shop. Then two great events at the Stitch Modern show came and went without me. Pity party for one?!?

The good news is, I'm finally on the other end of it. Yay! It's Friday, the sun is shinning, and these pretties are on my worktable. Happy sigh. Pretty fabric makes everything better, don't you think?

These are just a few prints from Spring House by Stephanie Ryan for Moda. You can see pictures of the entire collection on Stephanie's blog. These pieces are actually leftovers from a project Julie was working on. I'm going to make something springy for her shop.  : )

Have a great weekend!

Received!

My guild has a wonderful tradition of giving a bag full of goodies to the outgoing officers as a thank you. I received the most beautiful bag ever made by my friend Jen!

Guild members secretly stuffed it full of goodies. Look at the gorgeous assortment of fabric, notions and handmade gifts! They sure know how to spoil us.

We also recently swapped pincushions with several other modern quilt guilds. This sweet house came from Doris Carr of the Kansas City MQG. Look at all of the details. Wow!

I'm a very lucky lady.  : D

The Healer, A Quilt Top

Ta-da! I LOVED piecing this top. It still needs a good pressing, but I was too excited to see what it looked like. It's funny when you make a quilt like this that isn't based on repetitive blocks, it's really hard to see what it looks like until you're done. The name came when I started cutting the squares and it stuck, almost as if it named itself.

Introducing, The Healer.

I was originally going to use 2.5" squares and make a baby sized quilt. Just a fun little project I told myself.  Right before I started cutting, I changed my mind and upped the size of the squares to 3.5".  Easy enough to cut, but I forgot that would mean more fabric. I had to place an emergency fabric order for more Kona Bone. Now it's a healthy lap size, 54"x66".

I can't wait to quilt it. The added layer of texture will add so much to it's personality.

Notes about the fabric are in this previous post.

Sunday Review 09

Little bits of awesome I came across this week. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea) and enjoy!

Exciting fabric news. Coming soon, Briar Rose by Heather Ross for Windham. Quilting Cottons! Yay!!!

Fat Quarterly's #12 is out and it's all about pre-cuts. I'm loving this pillow by my friend Brioni.

The + and x quilt blocks are popping up all over instagram (#xplusalong). Holly's fabric choices are perfection.

Two giveaways too good to keep to myself:
-Elizabeth is giving away a really pretty fat quarter bundle. (ends 2/3... that's tonight!)

Two books from my wishlist officially hit the shelves.

Happy Sunday! Go Niners!!
