Granny is Finished!

A conversation from our lunch table:
Mmm, what kind of apples are these?
Granny Smith
Granny Sniff? Yuck!

Kids say the funniest things don't they? Thinking about this day still makes me laugh. My daughter was horrified that I was trying to feed her Granny Sniff apples. I'm dedicating this Granny Square Quilt to her.

I-can't-stop making granny squares.

These blocks date back to February 2012 (I had to check). Yikes! It was about time they got some love. They started as a quilt along with Dana from Old Red Barn Co. on flickr. We were all so inspired by this Granny Square quilt by Jolene from Blue Elephant Stitches.

Test Block, Granny Squares

The blocks came together quickly from my scraps and the last of my bolt of Moda Bella in Snow. I was going for a girly vintage look. The middle two prints above are from Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey. I'm not sure of the name for the fabric in the outer ring.

I love the colors in this block especially with the binding. That's a scrap of Loulouthi by Anna Maria Horner in the middle and the pink and green prints are both from Sunkissed by Sweetwater.

My motivation for finishing this quilt pittered out after making the blocks. It hung out for awhile on my table. I added the sashing and then I moved it to a project box. I brought it out again this summer after we moved. I needed a warm up project and sitting down to some meandering quilting felt just right. Up, down, in, out; a quilter's meditation.

Finishing the How About Green quilt on Monday felt so good that I wanted to finish something else. I chose this one because it just needed some binding. My daughter loves it, but she already claimed Summer Trip for her bed so I'm going to give this one to a local charity. It will bring a smile to another little girl who might need one.

I'm linking up with Katie and her charity quilt drive, 100 Quilts for Kids.

Finished Quilt: Sunny Stargazer

Here is my third and final quilt for Jacob's Heart.  I had a few extra blocks from making the Baby Stargazer quilt and it didn't take long to piece a few more.  It only takes 12 blocks to make a small quilt.  Aren't teal and yellow good together?  I don't think I will ever get tired of this color combo.

I have a confession.  The day I went shopping for backing fabric, I was one tired Mama.  I headed over to Julie's shop and I was having the hardest time choosing a fabric.  It was one of those days and as silly as it sounds now, it was almost too much.  Julie rescued me by suggesting this print from Notting Hill by Joel Dewberry and it was so perfect!  I  was so relieved, I think I might have hugged her.  Yep, I'm a hugger.  : )

To keep it crinkly and snuggly, I quilted it with an allover stipple.  I had one last piece of Quilter's Dream batting that was just big enough for this quilt.  It's so wonderful, especially fresh out of the dryer.  Oh man, heaven!!

Finished Quilt: Squares and Rectangles

Squares and Rectangles (front)

Here is another finish.  This is the quilt that my five-year-old daughter and I worked on together.  She had a lot of creative input and I love the way it turned out.  After she sketched her squares and rectangles, I had to figure out a way to make that into a quilt.

I was inspired by this quilt on flickr.  I liked the way the prints floated on the background instead of stacking them all together.  I was planning on a space between every colored piece, but my daughter insisted on stacking a few of them.  Good call, right?  The quilting is inspired by Jacquie Gering and Malka Dubrawsky.

Squares and Rectangles (back)

It was a fast and furious finish to get these bound before Tuesday night's meeting.  If it feels like these came out of nowhere, trust me they didn't.  The three quilts I finished for Jacob's Heart has taken every spare minute and lots of support from my family.  There may have been a few Instagram breaks in there too.  I could not do this every month, but I am so happy I took the time this month.

I have one more to share with you tomorrow.  It turned out to be the snuggliest one!

Finished Quilt: Skittles

After binding late into the night last, the Skittles quilt is done.  I made this quilt as part of a charity drive with the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  Our goal was to make 31 quilts in 31 days to give to Jacob's Heart.  This group of quilters have some of the biggest hearts I know and it looks like we are going to meet that goal!  All of these quilts are going to children in Santa Cruz County fighting cancer.  It was incredibly emotional to make this quilt.  I hope this brings brightness, light and love to it's new owner.

I choose fabrics that made me smile.  It's named Skittles after my husband said it reminded him of skittles candies.

Quilting for Kids

It's been quiet around here because I've head my head down quilting.  I'm trying to finish up a few quilts for Jacob's Heart as part of a charity quilt drive with the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  I planned on making two, but when my daughter also wanted to make a quilt, we added a third. There is one more week to finish and I have one more to quilt and all three to bind.  I think I can, I think I can.

It has been so much fun working with my daughter.  She has her own sensibilities and even at five, she seems to understand the process of making a quilt.  Whenever I work with my kids, I let them do as much as they can, try what they like, and only help when asked.  She has been a huge part of making this quilt.  Since last Saturday, she has:
  • created a mood board
  • drafted a design
  • picked out the fabric
  • assisted in the sorting and ironing
  • started the layout
  • supervised the piecing
  • taped the backing down for basting
  • spread out pins for basting
  • brought cookies to the quilter (me)

Phew.  A good week's work for a five year old (and her Mama).

The Accidental Rainbow

The South Bay Modern Quilt Guild announced a charity quilt drive last week. The goal is to make 31 quilts in 31 days for children with cancer and their families, through Jacob's Heart. I knew instantly I wanted to help.

It was late Thursday night and I started pulling fabric that made me happy right then and there. There were no rules, but I was looking for that gut reaction of, yes-happy. I started with the red polka dot (what's happier than that?) and added the oranges and yellows. Those Mini Muu Bees from Lecien are the sweetest thing ever. Then came the greens. It felt a little too citrusy and lacking in the teal department, my personal favorite. So I added some teal and pinky-purples. I did not set out to create a rainbow at all, but that's just what I did.

And here's the top. Inspired by the happy colors, I made some happy blocks. My husband thinks it looks like Skittles.

I'm going to finish this one too. I had a few Stargazer blocks already cut out, so this top came together quickly.

And you thought it was getting quiet around here! I'll be basting if you need me.

Urgent, Blocks for San Bruno

A Block for Kelsey
Mod Mosaic Block for Kelsey

This is an urgent call for blocks, Kelsey is making a quilt for a family in need.  This family lost their home in the San Bruno gas line explosion last year, the husband is currently in the hospital after someone else hit his car on the way to work, and they are expecting their first baby in December.  They need a quilt hug for sure!  Read all about it on Kelsey's blog post here.  Kelsey is asking for blocks, scraps and help spreading the word.

Finished! 100 Quilts for Kids

How am I supposed to follow up a blog post about a $600 quilt?  With a charity quilt of course.  ; )  There were some really good points made in the comments yesterday.  Comments about how your pricing affects others, different products might have different profit margins, and most crafters and quilters don't sell their quilts wholesale.  Most importantly remember that you make quilts because you LOVE it.

So here we go.  Hot off the sewing table... "Charming Sherbet Pips".

100 Quilts for Kids

I loved making this quilt!!  The charm packs were so cute on their own I didn't need to add anything.  Hey, some days you're a cook and some days you're a chef.  Today, I enjoyed being a cook.  I could just sit down, sew, and let my mind wander.  It felt wonderful.

100 Quilts for Kids

I used this quilting guide for the first time and it worked great.  Just slide it into your walking foot, and presto, a straight line guide that goes beyond the width of your foot.  Yahooie!

100 Quilts for Kids

As soon as I saw this cute scarf print I knew I would use it as a binding on a quilt.  I also attached the binding with my machine instead of by hand.  *gasp*  I know!  It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought and I finished a lot faster.  On the other hand, there was no snuggling underneath, watching (or listening to) a good movie, rounding the corners and finally a finish.  Different tools for different days.

100 Quilts for Kids

My daughter was eyeing this laid out on the table and thinks we should keep it there, "Mama, it makes the table so pretty".  She's right, but this quilt is destined for the 100 quilts for kids project going on now at Swim, Bike, Quilt.

The end.  : )

Charming Sherbet Pips

100 Quilts for Kids, Top
a finished top

100 Quilts for Kids, Quilt Label
a quilt label

I love Sherbet Pips by Aneela Hoey and I went a little crazy buying charm packs awhile back.  It took me two days to arrange the squares and one dato sew up the top.  True!  The colors and illustrations of this line make me so happy.  I hope they will make some little kid happy too.  I'm finishing this up as part of 100 Quilts for Kids.  You still have a couple of weeks to finish a quilt and participate.

I'm going to channel my inner Rita (redpepperquilts) and use straight lines all over this top.  Wish me luck!!  : )
