Giveaway: You're My Favorite

YOU'RE MY FAVORITE
There is something about this time of year that fills my heart and reminds me of the wonderful people in my life. It is so fun to wrap up little surprises and send some cheer. I was writing down a list of all my favorite quilting tools and I kept thinking about you. You are my favorite! I am so grateful for this quilting community. Thank you for your incredible, ongoing support.

12345678

1. OLFA 28 - This rotary cutter is a specialist. It is the perfect size when working with templates, curves, or paper piecing.

2. OLFA 45 - I have tried so many different rotary cutters and I always come back to this one. I've had it for years and it fits perfectly in my hand. It's easy to squeeze the handle to uncover the blade which automatically goes back into a covered position when I set it back down. So easy.

3. ADD A QUARTER - A must have for paper piecing. I like the larger 12" size.

4. WONDER CLIPS - These little guys are so handy in the sewing room. I use them on binding, zippers and bulky projects. They are also good when you are sewing with leather or plastic because they don't leave a mark.

5. OMNIGRID RULER - Out of all the rulers I've tried, these are my favorite. The markings are easy to read and accurate. This size fits easily under my hand and is perfect for cutting out smaller pieces and squaring up blocks.

6. AURIFIL THREAD - Strong, smooth thread that makes my seams lie super flat. Yes, please!

7. PATCHWORK PINS - I've gone through so many types of pins, but these are perfect. Sharp and super thin. They glide in and out of the fabric with ease.

8. SEAM RIPPER - Sometimes simple is best. This fits comfortably in my hand and is sharp for tackling any necessary un-sewing. I replace mine every so often because the blade does get dull over time. I buy two because I tend to lose them in my sewing room and they aren't very expensive.

Liberty Giveaway

Ok, I can't keep it in any longer. Some of that Liberty is for YOU!

Seriously. My husband bought fabric to giveaway to my peeps. He loves surprises and he knows how much you all mean to me!!

If I'm being completely honest, I'm having a hard time giving it up. I know it sounds silly, but Liberty will do that to a girl. He bought three coordinated rolls with the idea that I would keep one, and give away two. The problem is, when I go over to my table to choose which one to keep, I just can't decide. I love it all!!! I would love to make a Liberty version of this quilt by Sarah Fielke. So I need variety, not quantity.

In the name of sanity and compromise, I've decided to split them with you and giveaway three bundles instead of two. That's right, I'm cutting into the Liberty! Three winners will receive a bundle of eleven different prints, each measuring 26" x varying widths.

I will also cut each winner a fat quarter from my stash of their choosing. Remember these are cut from Liberty Lawn, which measures 52" wide and originally cut in meters not yards. Each fat quarter will measure about 19"x26".

Are you still with me?

I'm giving away three color coordinated Liberty bundles. Plus a fat quarter of any print you choose. Each bundle adds up to over 1 meter of Liberty Lawn!!!

What I need to know is...

What kind of peep are you?

Are you a new recent Peep?

old long time Peep?
Blog Peep?
Fabric Peep?
Local Peep?
Guild Peep?
Instagram Peep?
Facebook Peep?
Liberty Lovin' Peep?
What the heck is a Peep, Peep?

*I've updated the descriptions. I never meant to imply age! I meant how long have we known each other. So sorry. You are all such good sports. xx A

GIVEAWAY: I'm giving away three Liberty bundles. Three winners will be selected randomly, announced on this blog, and contacted via email. This giveaway is open to all my peeps, no matter where you live. In other words, International entries are welcome.

Please make sure your email is either in your profile or part of your comment. If I can't contact you, I will choose another winner.

TO ENTER: Leave one comment below and tell me what kind of peep are you.

37 Sketches by Gwen Marston: A Review and a Giveaway

After seeing my Liberated Habitat quilt, Gwen sent me a copy of her newest book, 37 Sketches to review and give away to one of you. Now that I’ve read it, I’m so jealous you get a chance to win this beautiful and inspiring book!

The first thing I noticed about this book is the beautiful cloth covered binding and the embossed title. Inside, the quilts, or sketches as Gwen calls them, come alive against a crisp white backdrop. It is a celebration of bold color combinations, inventive piecing and intriguing compositions.

It's no wonder that it won an award in the 2012 New York Book Show! It is truly a beautiful book.

37 Sketches by Gwen Marston

37 Sketches begins with a foreword by Gwen's long time friend, Jean Wells, setting the tone for an creative and intimate glimpse behind Gwen's quilt making process. There is also a section that explains Gwen’s philosophy behind 37 Sketches. It's a journey of exploration where one experiment leads to the next.

This is not a pattern book, there is not a template or cutting diagram in sight. Instead, it is a beautiful, high quality, art book, featuring many, many, small “sketches” by Gwen Marston.
“ I specifically made the pieces featured in this book as experimental sketches with the intent of exploring and playing with technique, abstract design, and composition.  Making these small studies is just the place to risk an adventure.” p. 16

Gwen_8446

Risk an adventure. I just love that. Each piece is accompanied by a short explanation of what Gwen was working on, or what her goal was, either set in curved piecing, a different color palette, or pushing the familiar liberated log cabin. As an admirer of her other books, I really appreciated this glimpse behind Gwen's process.

Gwen_8449

As you look through 37 Sketches, it feels like you’re walking through an art gallery with your good friend Gwen as she shares insights into her process. It’s wonderful!!!
"All along the way, one purpose in making these small studies was to explore color use. Working with neutrals and limiting the design to thin horizontal lines interrupted by little (squares) was the idea for this piece." p. 49
Gwen_8447

I am a big admirer of Gwen’s work and her books, and this one does not disappoint. Her voice and her projects excite me to create, to push myself, and to be playful. She is such an inspiration.

"As I was just saying, I'm still working with the liberated log cabin format."

You can read more about Gwen on her website, www.gwenmarston.com. Her books can be ordered directly through her. She travels throughout the year speaking and teaching. Maybe traveling near you? Gwen also hosts an annual retreat in Elk Rapids, MI. Someday I would love to go.

*** This giveaway is now closed ***

GIVEAWAY: The Intrepid Thread

I'm lucky because I have a friend in the fabric business. Julie and I are both members of the local modern quilt guild and you can just imagine the happy chatter that goes on between a fabric fiend (me) and a fabric shop owner (Julie). I thought I knew a lot about fabric, but Julie knows even more! The members of our guild keep trying to stump her with fabric questions and we haven't been able to...yet.
Imagine sharing a quilt at a guild meeting and someone asking, "what's the name of that green fabric?", puzzled looks all around while we try to remember the name of it; then Julie saves us by naming the designer, the fabric line, and the release date. She sure knows her fabric!! Even more than that she is an incredibly kind, funny, generous woman and a good friend. Super lucky I tell you.

(she's probably blushing right now... it's ok though because it's all true.)

Do you want to know why are you are so lucky? Remember the other day when I went fabric shopping for my latest project, Peaceful Pagoda? Well, Julie is giving away a custom bundle inspired by that post!! AND it's available in her shop so you can get some and make your own Peaceful Pagoda project!

Custom Bundle at The Intrepid Thread
**Edited to add: The dragonfly print is from Kate Spain's new line, Good Fortune.  It's called, Tranquility Dragonfly.  Here it is in aqua and lavender.  There are names and links to all of the prints I bought from Julie in my post, Peaceful Pagoda.
