Happy Thoughts

The idea for this quilt started with a stack of pretty fabrics.  My happy colors.  Wanna see?

These are all rejected Love bindings.  They looked so pretty together that I stacked them up and let them sit and hang out awhile.  Mingle.  I had a hard time choosing a pattern I liked.  I was thinking of something along the lines of these three quilts.  I kept rearranging the pile, trying to simplify the stack and I kept sketching squares and log cabins.  The squares were a little too simple, and the log cabins were too traditional.  I didn't want the large scale of some of the fabrics to get lost in small skinny strips.  This morning I woke up thinking...

Big oversize blocks,
Pretty fabrics.

This is the plan.  I'm calling it "Brick House" because... it's not a log cabin.  ; )

Adobe Illustrator was my colored pencils today.  My kids lost all of mine except red and brown.  I'll save them for my Rouenneries quilt.  Ha!

  1. It's going to be stunning!!

  6. I just love this quilt! Such cheery colors and prints. Thanks for showing the block sizes but can you tell me are these the cut sizes or the finished size of each piece? I'd like to start cutting some scraps. Thanks!

    1. I can't wait to see!! I've always thought this would be great scrappy. : ) Listed above are the finished dimensions.

      Here are the unfinished/cut sizes.

      White, 4.5" x 4.5"
      Green, 4.5" x 4.5"
      Teal, 4.5" x 8.5"
      Aqua, 4.5" x 8.5"
      Pink, 4.5" x 12.5"

  7. Any idea how much fabric you used?

    1. No, I'm sorry, I didn't write that down. This was originally shared as a sketch for a project I was working on. Now it's been so long I can't remember how much fabric I used.

  8. Going to use this with a huge stack of vintage shabby-chic prints that were passed down to me. It will be perfectly imperfect. Love it!

  9. I'm new to quilting and this looks fun! What is the finished measurement of the quilt?

    1. Hi Jolene, I can't remember the size of this quilt, but I made a similar one here ( that measures 45" x 58".

You can make the quilt any size depending on how many blocks you use and how wide you cut the sashing and borders (the white parts in this quilt.) Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions! : )
