Strip Challenge

I'm a member of the Bay Area Modern Quit Guild and at our last meeting I challenged our members to a strip swap.  We all brought in 2.5" strips from our stashes at home and put them in a big bag at the meeting.  We passed the bag around and took turns picking out a random strip.  There was a lot on nervous giggling as none of the strips really seemed to relate to each other... at all!

These are the strips I picked at random from the bag.

The challenge is to use these strips together with the addition of one fabric and make a modern baby quilt to share at our next meeting.  Our final projects will be donated to our local hospital NICU.

I've been reading a lot about Denyse Schmidt's workshops and I wanted to push myself and our guild to get a little funky and spontaneous.

For inspiration I put together this flickr gallery of some of my favorite strip, scrappy, wonky, modern quilts.

What is a guild activity that you loved?

  4. Your strips look like they co-ordinate quite well. Can you add some of your own too, or do you just have to use these ones? Funnily enough, I was looking at strip quilts last night too! There's a whole flickr group of stacked strip quilts! I had t add some to my faves. :-)

  6. That's a great idea for a swap! I might mention it to my guild too.
Speaking of strips, one of my favorite guild activities was Strip Poker! The ante for each had was one strip & whoever had the high card won the pile. :D

  12. Been thinking about trying to make a visit to the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild when i have a chance (it's a little bit further than I usually venture on my own). Any recommendations on a good time to visit? I've never been to a quilt guild meeting before...

  13. I have not joined a quilt guild yet. I want to join the local one but with my plans to move in 6 months, I am thinking of waiting until I get setteld in somewhere new, that way I can get a new connection to the area. i will keep this in mind though for when I do join one!

  15. Sandra, we decided to exchange 10 strips. The strips that I show in my picture is exactly what I went home with. Here is a link to the finished quilt called, "Born to Shine" http://www.littlebluebell.com/2010/12/born-to-shine.html
