Quilting for Kids

It's been quiet around here because I've head my head down quilting.  I'm trying to finish up a few quilts for Jacob's Heart as part of a charity quilt drive with the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild.  I planned on making two, but when my daughter also wanted to make a quilt, we added a third. There is one more week to finish and I have one more to quilt and all three to bind.  I think I can, I think I can.

It has been so much fun working with my daughter.  She has her own sensibilities and even at five, she seems to understand the process of making a quilt.  Whenever I work with my kids, I let them do as much as they can, try what they like, and only help when asked.  She has been a huge part of making this quilt.  Since last Saturday, she has:
  • created a mood board
  • drafted a design
  • picked out the fabric
  • assisted in the sorting and ironing
  • started the layout
  • supervised the piecing
  • taped the backing down for basting
  • spread out pins for basting
  • brought cookies to the quilter (me)

Phew.  A good week's work for a five year old (and her Mama).

  2. such precious memories with your daughter - I'm throughly impressed by her involvement in all the steps. a lot of kids her age wouldn't have the focus to see it to the end.

  3. This post made me tear up! It is so hard for me to "let go" when my children and I are crafting, but I'm working on it. I'm thinking my son might like to make his own quilt especially the designing process.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

  5. My boys love to quilt too. I'll have to get them up to speed on the "bring cookies to the quilter" bit though!
