Mood Board: Black and White

I'm looking for black and white fabrics. More white than black please. Something a little bit sketchy, a little bit quirky, throw in some text, a classic dot and a smidgen of unexpected color. Yes! That's it!!

Mood Board: After Midnight

There is a garden I know of, filled with posies and fairy rings. An old bicycle rests against the garden shed. It's still and quiet after midnight, but the garden does not sleep. Spider webs are laced with dew. Snails leave hidden trails along the pathways. Gossip can be heard amongst the crickets. Insect wings glimmer in the moonlight and tiny seeds dance in the crisp night air. Sit and watch long enough and you will see the golden rays of sunlight cut through the ink filled sky. Dawn is coming and a new day is about to begin.

Mood Board: Team Ruth

At our last meeting, Ruth, our President, asked us to bring in snippets of color with enough pieces to share. Then she assembled us into groups. Together each group used the snippets to create different color palettes. We had to choose one color palette and brings scraps in those colors to the next meeting. Here is the palette my group decided on.

This morning I spent some time digging through my scrap bucket. Truth be told, it's more of a scrap black hole. Pieces of fabric are tossed in and never seen again. I knew the teal and yellow would be easy to find, but what about that orchid and black?! Oy.

Not to worry. I found two scraps of black and a few orchid-ish pieces. I threw the solid back into the bin because it was so dark compared to the rest. The teal with black pattern was a really happy find. I wish I had more color prints with just a touch of black in the design. Denyse Schmidt usually has one or two really good ones in each of her collections. The print with the dog on it had orchid and yellow. Yes!!!

I'm cheekily calling it, "Team Ruth". Looking at them all together, I am so surprised! I never thought I had this beautiful combination lurking in my scrap bin. I wonder what we're going to do with them on Saturday. If you're in the area, come on by. Bay Area Modern meets at 1:30pm at the Redwood City Public Library.

Lesson learned. If you're looking for inspiration, take five minutes and dig through your scrap bin. : )

Mood Board: Missy's Tea Party

Today our neighborhood is slightly cloudy and warm. The fruit trees are starting to bud out and the grass is freshly mown. I visited Hawthorne Threads this morning to see what's new. Window shopping is good for my soul.

Inspired by this print, I started picking out sweet pinks, dusty aquas, and springy yellow-greens. A touch of black dresses it up for a proper tea party. Come on over, Missy is waiting for you. : )

Mood Board: Cameo and Friends

Hi! I hope you're having a good summer so far. There hasn't been much free sewing time these days, but that never stops me from dreaming of new projects. I've been waiting for Cameo by Amy Butler to finally hit the stores. It was one of my favorite collections at Spring Quilt Market.

I noticed that the sky blues and earthy greens coordinated nicely with the Birds and the Bees by Tula Pink. Add in some Art Gallery solids and you get this happy combo. I call it Cameo and Friends. Buh-dum-ching. ; )

This is hot off the cutting table at the Intrepid Thread. I added the coral solid on top from my stash for a little zing. I think I love it!

Now, what to do with it? I'm not quite sure yet and it's going to be awhile before I get a chance to play. I have a fuzzy idea of a patchwork quilt with a twist. We'll see.

Mood Board: Sour Punch

Have you noticed the wave of sour green that's coming? It's grabbed a hold of me and won't let go. There are older fabrics that I've passed on several times that all of a sudden I must have. The Herringbone print from Modern Meadow is a good example. I own every color except green. What is happening to me?!

I already spent my fabric money this month, but that didn't stop me from window shopping. My cart looked so pretty that I decided to make a mood board and share it with you.

Peaceful Pagoda

One of my favorite things to do is play with color and fabric. Inspiration is everywhere! Sometimes it starts with one fabric that I see and just love. Then I start thinking, what would I do with that?

The other night I was window shopping online at The Intrepid Thread. Kate Spain's new line Good Fortune had just arrived and I was excited to take a closer look. I was drawn immediately to the Tranquility Lantern Flower print. I really liked the mix of purple, aqua and orange.

Then I browsed through the other fabrics looking for prints I liked in those colors. Initially I opened anything that might work. I was looking for a variety of scale, value, and subject (i.e. not too many florals or dots) and I narrowed the list down slowly. It was not surprising that many of them came from Good Fortune!

Sometimes my day dreaming stops there. Other times, I start to build a quilt.

Introducing Bahama Mama, a Blogger's Choice Challenge

Laura at Quokka Quilts issued a challenge on her blog. Create your own Blogger's Choice bundles. Choose 12 prints and 3 solids. I jumped at the chance to play because I love making mood boards. To make it just a little more interesting, there are also judges and prizes. Yes! Come play along. : )

Currently, my house looks like a tornado hit it. Toys, boxes and Christmas decorations are all over the place. It's a happy mess, but still a mess. I need a tropical vacation. Introducing, "Bahama Mamma." Oh Cabana boy?!?!

You can see I was drawn to lots of warm, sunny, saturated tones. Mai Tai anyone?

Safari Baby Beginnings

Thank you so much for all of your positive feedback on my Cross Strings block!! There has been some interest in a tutorial or a quilt along. I think that sounds like a lot of FUN! Let me see what I can come up. : )

Today, I've got a new baby quilt in the works. The Mother-to-be likes purple and the nursery will have a safari theme. My goal is to make a soft, happy quilt that will grow with the new baby.

I really like this print from Central Park by Kate Spain. I'm using the third one from the left. Purple? Check! Animals? Check! Fun, fresh color palette? Check!

I chose my colors based on the print. I'm using mostly purples and yellow with a just hint of taupe and blue for balance. There is a variety of values within each color and I stayed away from anything too light since the animal print is on a white background. Add in a mix of scale and shapes and we're looking good. Aren't they pretty together?

Garden By The Sea

I have been eyeing this print from Secret Garden by Sandi Henderson. It's so pretty and swirly. I especially love it in the Speckle color. I was window shopping at Fresh Squeezed Fabrics and the next thing you know I was day dreaming of lunching in Carmel, Ca. Carmel, officially named, Carmel-By-The-Sea is a little seaside town with cute shops, yummy cafes and sweet pots of geraniums everywhere. The houses in the village are known for their secret gardens.

This is my daydream, "Garden By The Sea"

Everyday Summer

It all started with a trip to the grocery store. I was hungry, hot and thirsty. This magazine was taunting me in the check out line...

I added it to the conveyor belt.

Later that day while the kids were playing, I sat with my feet in the kiddie pool flipping through the pages. I kept going back to the cover. There was something about that bold fuchsia, bright blue and warm yellow. Why yes Martha, that does feel like summer!

A couple of days later I was browsing fabric online, as you do, and I came across this print by Anna Maria Horner. This print is not new, I know this print. Isn't it lovely? Suddenly I couldn't get enough.

The next thing you know I was picking out coordinates and I had, "Everyday Summer".
